Professor Bill Gibson is a renowned ear, nose and throat (ENT) Surgeon and world leader in cochlear implantation and Menière’s disease. He has performed just over 2000 cochlear implant surgeries. He was one of the pioneers of cochlear implantation worldwide and the first professor of otology (ear surgery) at the University of Sydney. Professor Gibson is now retired from the university but continues his clinical practice as a semi-retired ear specialist. Professor Gibson passionately believes cochlear implants are the best form of intervention for all people with hearing loss—particularly for children who are born with profound hearing loss. In 1984, he was instrumental in the establishment of a cochlear implant program that eventually became NextSense Cochlear Implant Services.
Under Professor Gibson’s direction, NextSense has performed more than 4500 cochlear implant surgeries and is not only one of the largest programs in the world, but also regarded as a world leader in the provision of cochlear implant and related services. Specialities Cochlear implants, Meniere’s disease and tinnitus. In 1984, he was instrumental in the establishment of a cochlear implant program that eventually became NextSense Cochlear Implant Services. Laura has Meniere's disease.
She has used her training as a Nutritional Therapist to manage her symptoms based on latest research suggesting that Ménière's is a form of autoimmune disease. She has made a number of dietary changes that has helped her to identify the underlying causes of her symptoms, and ultimately to control them. By listening to her body after eating certain foods she has learnt to support her immune system back to health.
Although she has not cured her Meniere’s she is now symptom free and is on a mission to help others support their health naturally.
Laura said: “If you are suffering with Ménière's, or an autoimmune disease or other health issue, and looking for ways to improve things, nutrition can be a surprisingly powerful tool.”

Julieann has had Meniere’s for 25 years and throughout her journey she has maintained a positive approach. In 2004 she had a gentamicin injection destroyed her balance cells in her MD ear and through vestibular physiotherapy she relearnt her new normal. She was recently fitted with a cochlear implant. 100% of book profits are donated to research to finding a cure for Meniere's disease.
Melanie talks to us through our diet in particular salt, fluids, sugar and caffeine and how these may impact on those of us with Meniere's Disease
Prof Jeffrey Harris UNSW Meniere’s Presentation – 8 February 2023
Hi Dizzies
Many of you are asking about the zoom session yesterday, 8 February presented by Prof Jeffrey Harris.
Unfortunately, as most of us were unable to attend this session, the questions are coming in thick and fast about the presentation i.e. was recorded etc. If it has been, I will share the link with you.
For the moment, all I can give you at the moment is the feedback I received from three dizzies in our group:
Dizzy Feedback 1Prof Harris gave an excellent presentation on MD and the studies that have been done. He concluded that all MD patients have evidence of endolymphatic hydrops, but concluded we don’t know why. Either too much fluid is released or not enough reabsorbed, or both. Then Rick Friedman took over and explained the genetic study of 527 MD patients against some databases. Here I got lost. A group of genes about 34, were statistically proven to be associated with MD. The study was made possible by a USD1.3 million by a private donor who was a family connection to a long term MD patient.
Dizzy Feedback 2:
A very enlightening and lucid presentation today - I was wondering: is Dr Friedman's team the people Daniel Browne said were overoptimistic about how long it would be before their research bore fruit for sufferers? The first part of the talk taught me lots I didn't know, e.g. that if you haven't developed bilateral hearing loss in the first 8 years you probably won't - some faint glimmer of hope... and the suggestion that it might not be inherited by my daughters was even more so.
Dizzy Feedback 3:
The third dizzy took screenshots of the presentation which is wonderful, with some personal notes. Please see attached PDF.
In the meantime, if there is a recording of this or if more information comes in about this session, I will share with you.
Cheers
Dizzy Anne
